Backgammon is one of the world’s oldest board games, with a history dating back at least five thousand years. It is a two-player strategy game where each player has fifteen checkers, which move across twenty-four points on the board. The movement of the checkers happens according to the roll of a pair of dice. The objective of the game is to win by being the first to move all fifteen checkers off the board. Strategy and tactics are crucial during gameplay, but the results can be determined by luck in the short term. However, in the long run, over a series of games, the more skilful player will almost always win.
Playing backgammon can help teach basic maths as well as more advanced concepts such as luck and probability. Players learn how to not rely on pure luck by using strategies and tactics to maximise the effectiveness of each move. The game helps players learn about probability and how to apply it to decision-making in each turn. As a game, it is not only fun, but also educational.
